The world was inhabited by two species of people. The Spoken, who were human in every single way, and the Silence. The Silence were a race of mute people who communicated through projecting their thoughts to the minds of others. They could not read minds, nor hold any special powers. They simply sent their thoughts to others. The two races lived in harmony for hundreds of years. However, the Spoken soon became uneasy with the Silence. The Government began to convince themselves that the Silence really did have powers and were a danger to the Spoken. The Spoken rose up in an event that would later be renamed the Cleansing during which they attempted to commit genocide against all of the people of the Silence. Nearly the entire race was decimated, but a select few escaped and went into hiding in the wilderness. However, during the peacetime before the Cleansing, a new race had emerged. The children of one Spoken and one Silence - who were known as the Secrets. They possessed the qualities of both Spoken and Silence. They were not mute, but could communicate through touch. They, unlike the Silence, can read minds through some mutated gene. The world descended into relative peace after the Cleansing, the Silence living on in secret and the Spoken slowly rebuilding their world in rigid dictatorship. Some of the Secrets have allied themselves with the Government, and others with the Resistance.
